Welcome to Week 9 of the CoT Program. This page contains the program curriculum for the Week 9 session.

Objectives: The objectives of this session are to:

  • Increase understanding and awareness of climate change, transportation, and energy complexities.

  • Empower members to strengthen their capabilities to advocate, debate, and persuade others to take action to address global climate change, transportation, and energy challenges.

  • Provide more details on the CoT Final Project Competition.

Advocacy Debate Competition

Exercise or Activity

Instructions:

​

  • Use the Advocacy Debate Competition Worksheet and the Five Step Advocacy Process to build your debate position.

  • Divide teen members into two groups. One group will argue for the issue and the other group will argue against the issue.

  • Members will be provided an advocacy debate scenario and position that they must defend and advocate for.

  • Each group will research their advocacy scenario to collaborate and develop a strong debate argument.

  • Video: Each group will prepare a 2-minute advocacy debate video to defend their position. Designate someone to record the debate with a video and share:                           

    1. the debate issue or topic

    2. if your group is advocating for or against the issue or topic

    3. why your group is for or against by providing 2-3 key points to support or defend your argument (why this issue is important

    4. what will make the issue better, and

    5. what action should be taken.

  • The group in each session who (1) submits their video by the deadline and (2) presents the strongest argument will win prizes. Winners will be announced in Week 10 (or after your completes Week 9).

  • (Facilitators) Submit the Advocacy Debate Competition Worksheet and video (one for each group) to cot@bgcgw.org by Friday, March 29th at 12 noon EST or Friday at 12 pm (EST) the week you complete Week 9.

  • What new advocacy approach did you discover?

2.  Facilitator:

  • Provide an Overview of Week 10.

  • Record attendance for Week 9.
